How can I keep my black horse from getting "sun-bleached" during summer?

I have a 15 yr old horse, who is very dark brown/ black, and last summer he became very light( lots of light color on his back, which were exposed to the sun the most.) I want to prevent this from happening next summer, but I definately do not want to put any sort of blankets or sheets on him. Any suggestions?
I have heard about using paprika or different shampoos; do those work?

I’m afraid it’s impossible without keeping him in a stall or covered arena. Only a "true black" will hold up to the sun bleaching powers of the sun.

  2. LOL he’s a horse not a GQ model! Quit being so superficial and enjoy your horse as is.

  3. I would leave him up in the stall during the day to save his color if you can. I know people that use ADM Alliance Feed supplements say that their horses color does not bleach when out in the sun. They love the stuff. There is also a spray that you can use from Seminole called Sunflower Sun Guard.
