How do you keep a horse black and extra shiny?

Show season is coming up and I want my Gelding to maintain his black color and be super shiny to draw attention. Any suggestions for either?
I use him for everything. Barrels, English and Western Pleasure, Showmanship, Dressage, and I’m going to start reining and jumping this year.

Paprika to keep him black. Then corn oil( 3 TBS), sunflower seeds, a hard boiled egg 1 time a week for his shine! Turn him loose at night if able

wash and brush him…and you need to keep him in the barn during the day time …only bring him out at night…the sun shine will fade his black color

  5. Keep him out of the sun. Stall or sheet during the day, and turnout at night. There is also a product called "Black as Knight" that you can use that supposedly helps keep the black sheen as well. Other than that, good grooming, don’t overdo it on the baths because that can strip the oil out of the coat. Before you go in the ring you can spray him with show sheen to add to the gloss, just be sure to not get it in your saddle area, because it makes the coat slick.

  6. The fly spray Absorbashine Ultra Shield has sun screen in it. I use it on my black horse and he never turns "red". As far as keeping him shiny – if you are feeding him optimum food and a good supplement, he should be shiny. In addition to grass hay and alfalfa hay, I feed Intregrity Lite to which I add a vitamin powder called "vita-key" which I order online. However, I’m in California where the hay is calcium rich, so I chose vita-key because it doesn’t add additional calcium.

  7. wheat germ oil and black sunflower seed, but not the kind at walmart b/c they have a coating on them that’s bad for horses.

  8. try a flax seed supplement. i use gleam and gain (only 1 scoop a day, any more makes the horse gain weight) and it works really well.
you dont have to brush him everyday, just wash him the day before a show and put on some shine spray before you go into the show ring. (silverado shine is my favorite)

just keep him stalled & if you do turn him out try to limit his time or do it at night so he doesn’t get a sunburn. idk if i would trust the fly spray that someone said has sunscreen in it (if you want to try it do it after your last show so your horse will still have his summer coat and you can test it out). to keep him extra shiny, buy some corn oil from wal-mart and add about a cup to his grain(make sure to mix it up good,,and also your horse may refuse it at first but he will get used to it) i use corn oil and all of our horses have gorgeous coats and we hardly ever bathe them. it will also help a thin horse gain weight quickly.

also what style of riding do you do with him?

  12. There’s a high concentration mix that tractor supply sells called laser sheen that works real well. I show horses also in barrel racing, reining, and halter and I show cattle sheep and poultry in FFA. One thing I use on the Cattle and Horses who are pure black is a hair product from sullivan’s supply called Revive it works real well just spray the white foam on and brush it in twice a day every other day.. Also try to keep him out of the sunlight so much the reason his hair will become red along his back is because the sun is bleaching the color out… Hope this helps

  13. Depending on if he’s in a barn or in a pasture. If he is outside he will tend to get a sun burned color, brownish. You can keep a light summer sheet on him to keep this from happening. If he is in the barn he should stay nice and black, just use a shedding comb on him every day. Right before a show use a oil, baby oil works fine, put it in a spray bottle and spray and brush. He will look awesome with the slick shine! I always rub the nose and ears with oil before going in the ring as well.

Keeping him black in summer is tricky, but keeping him in during the day and turn out at night is one way. They also make supplements that help keep coats black, but I’m sure how credible they are.
