How do you take a snapshot of your screen without using a camra?

Like for example on page http://www.mtholyoke.edu/lits/ris/documentation/advanced_excel/ because doing a presentation soon and I want to show each step like that.

Alternately – under Windows, ALT-PrintScreen will capture only the current window rather than the entire screen. That way you don’t have to crop it in your photo editing app. This may be more convenient. Or, you might want to capture the entire screen… your choice.

Important tip: Screen caps should be saved as GIF, not JPG. JPG is for things created from e.g. cameras that started out in real life. GIF will drop your colorspace to just 256 colors but it will avoid compression artifacts in the fine details.

  1. Hit the "print screen" button. Then open paint (under accessories on programs) and paste it, save it.

or, if using a mac, hit command (apple) + shift + 3 to capture the whole screen. If you only want part of the screen, do command + shift + 4, and you will have crosshairs as your mouse that you can use to select any part of the screen to capture.

  5. The answers above are correct but if you happen to have Vista you can use the Snipping Tool (found under Programs/Accessories) just open it and click and drag around the area you want and save as a JPEG. Insert it into your presentation.
