You know, russian people have this heavy drinking fame, just wondering.

yes, there were some kind of taverns, where beer was served.
Many would bring vodka and combine it
Russian baths were another place for men to "celebrate" life.
The rest would drink cheap port or vodka. It all stopped in 1985 when Gorbachev came to power and sobriety was reinforced. Did not do any good. Huge amount of wineries were destroyed. Alcoholism only went up. With lots of lethality. Since real alcohol was hard to get, people started to drink anything that had any level of alcohol, Technical spirits, cheap parfume.

He started out writing drinking songs before moving on to classical.

As soon as I read your title I instantly thought of Henry Purcell. He was noted for his tavern songs and catches as stated in this review of such music as sung by the late Alfred Deller:

Your title suggests that he hung out in taverns which inspired him to write such music, which may or may not be true. He did write some other wonderful, high-minded compositions as well….particularly all those odes to members of the royal family and several delightful stage productions including "King Arthur", "The Fairy Queen" and "Dido and Aeneas"

Its so that a good bar man can keep a close eye on his customers whilst pouring drinks from the optic shelf or putting money in the till.etc.
A pub landlord once told me that a good barman should be able to see every inch of the pub all the time to make sure there is no drug dealing or violence etc occurring on the premises

Most places are closed that day. Generally the chinese restaurants are the only places that are open.
