Why does the king of hearts have a sword through his head?

Does he kill himself while the other kings live or what? He is the king of HEARTS the LOVE king why does he kill himself!!?

The proper name of the King of Hearts, also known as the Suicide King, is Charlemagne. The true cause of Charlemagne’s death around 72 years of age is unknown. However, historians have suggested several causes of death, including suicide because of the death of two of his sons. Hope this helps!
