Al Murray (born 1968), is a British comedian best known for his stand-up persona, “The Pub Landlord,” a stereotypical xenophobic public house licensee, and indeed earlier in his career he performed in pubs.
In 2003, he was listed in “The Observer” as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy and in 2007 he was voted number sixteen on Channel 4’s hundred greatest stand-ups.
The Pub Landlord is a stereotypical working class British nationalist with a dislike for anything “un-British”. He has a particular dislike of Germans and the French; he will challenge the audience to name any country in the world before producing some plausible instance of Britain bettering it.
Catchphrases include “All hail to the ale!”, “…beautiful British name!”, “Time-waster!”, “You DISGUST me!”, “Pint for the fella… Glass of white wine/ fruit-based drink for the lady!”, “The Point is this…” “if we had no rules where would we be? France! And if we had too many rules where would we be? Germany!”, “Is your dad proud of you, son? He’s never said so, has he?” and “I was never confused”, which is an allusion to a supposed gay interlude in his character’s early identity.
The character also has a great love for the British 1970’s rock band Queen, often getting the musician(s) on his show to perform a song of Queen’s in their own style.

That guy in the audience was kinda pissed…
I didn’t find this type of comedy very funny (satire or not). = /

I just checked your channel. You are a militant atheist like I used to be. I have a blog you may be interested in. Go on my channel and look at my web address.
Cont>>> oh yeah and …
Cont>>> oh yeah and I like Ross noble. He is a very good serialist comic… oh and btw I have done Stand up comedy before.. The crowd will laugh at anything. They have paid to laugh. If you think you can do comedy. I will see you at the UP the creek comedy club in Greenwich.
Cont>>> however as …
Cont>>> however as a proffesional comedian he should be pushing the envolope and trying to be a bit clever with it. People like larry david. Judd apatow, ricky gervais. Jimmy carr. (I dont like aJimmy carr, I think his act is too straight. His craft and structure is excellent however. He is also very topical)
@AnonEyeMouse Hmm, …
@AnonEyeMouse Hmm, Granted. I was trying to keep to as few words as possible and ended up making no sense.
‘The fact that AL murray has had no success as himself means that he relies on a very shallow character. ‘
Translates as “Al murray has had no success without using the Pub landlord character which is one dimensional”
Name one joke that AL murray does in this video which you can herald as a good joke. Every person on earth can do humour. It is part of our social repertoire.
‘Al murray is no …
‘Al murray is no Bill hicks’
And Bob Dylan is no Jacques Brel…
‘The fact that AL murray has had no success as himself means that he relies on a very shallow character. ‘
You should get a better grasp of logic before speaking, because this makes no sense.
David Bowie had no success as David Jones, therefore he is a bad musician? Really?
There is no objective rating for comedy. There is no technical achievement to be rank on (other than being able to stand and speak) other than laughter.
@AnoneyeMouse I …
@AnoneyeMouse I understand your point. but Just because people like it doesnt make it any more or less good.
It is like comparing JLS to mozart. The musical “Cats” to ” A midsummer nights dream”.
we can all appreciate something. But there is Bad, good and genius comedy.. The fact that AL murray has had no success as himself means that he relies on a very shallow character. The act is as one dimensional as they come.. Ask any serious comedian or comedy writer.. Al murray is no Bill hicks.
“No… he was …
“No… he was meaning black. That was the joke he was making… pretending he had confused siblings for black guys. It meant he could pull out the B.A. Barracas fear of flying gag…”
That is an example of what I am talking about. It is an incredibly weak joke.. It doesnt work as it is a forced connection.
There is a …
There is a subjective element to comedy. It is well known that you cant laugh with someone you dont like and conversely you cant not like someone who you have shared a laugh with. In Freud’s “Wit And Its Relation To The unconscious” He lays down a pretty good understanding of what is humourous and why. Darwin also described the act of laughing as being the reaction to two equal yet apposing ideals or concepts. also the surprise at the shift between these concepts. Al murray is just Dumb comedy.

Agreed entirely with you. I can’t stand ‘comedians’ who rely upon shouting at the audience and making stupid, incessant noises.

Nope. It just means it isn’t for you.
That was really …
That was really horrible comedy…
yeah yeah I know it’s supposed to be satire and normally I love that kind of stuff, but this was just a stupid looking guy, desperatly trying to be funny.
BestofAtheism has had way better comedy vids in the past, go watch them.
You can try to …
You can try to intellectualise your opinion as much as you like, claiming it to be based on analysis of craft and technique. That just proves you don’t understand the basis of comedy.
People laugh at his performance and go to his shows. He’s funny, you can tell that by listening to the audience.
Now, you may not find him funny, but that is not the point.
I hate country music, but I’m not going to insist they can’t play their instruments.
No… he was …
No… he was meaning black. That was the joke he was making… pretending he had confused siblings for black guys. It meant he could pull out the B.A. Barracas fear of flying gag…
You are missing the …
You are missing the point. The crap impression of Mr T is part of the persona. Just like the pint of beer he’s swinging around the stage and the blazer he’s wearing.
It is DEEPLY rooted …
It is DEEPLY rooted in British working class stereotypes, I can’t think of any American parrallels off the top of my head.
Unless you spend a moderate amount of time over here or pay close attention to our media then most of his act is likely to pass you by.
Pope JP II claimed …
Pope JP II claimed so. He was terrified of flight, would kiss the ground whenever he disembarked and thank God for having arrived safely.
