Can I clean houses for money while relying on public transport?

I’m 19 and want to earn enough money to move out and support myself. I would like to clean people’s houses for money and think I could do a good job. But I don’t have a car and would have to rely on getting the bus or walking to all my destinations. This means I wouldn’t be able to bring a mop, sweeping brush or vacuum cleaner. Can I work around this?

Yes, if you want to make this happen you can. Just be sure to let prospective clients know that you will be using their cleaning supplies and not bringing your own. Every home will have their own mop and vacuum, and would probably prefer you using their and not dragging dirt around from house to house anyway.

  1. Congratulations on your desire to start a business at an early age. Unless you will be cleaning homes in your neighborhood, your first priority should be to have reliable transportation. If you are going to be relying on public transportation alone, you may be setting yourself up for failure. Another idea is to involve several associates who have transportation and want to work with you. Be completely fair on how you pay them. I also recommend reading Dale Carnegie’s short book "how to make friends and influence people" as it is a good model for communicating and being effective in work relationships. Save up money, build good credit, and buy a cheap reliable car. Good luck!

  2. You already know the answer to your question. You would NOT be able to do this, because you cannot bring the needed supplies with you, and you would need a lot more than just a mop or vacuum cleaner. Anyone you get to drive you (or a taxi) will charge you way more than it was worth to clean the house.

I suggest you get a job and save up money, buy a car, and if you still see this in your future, then do it, but I doubt you would make any money doing it, so maybe it’s for the best.

  4. Yes. You’ll have to plan ahead and take one bus earlier to make sure you don’t arrive late.
