any ale drinkers out there? i mean REAL ale.?

and whats your favorite tipple? i am currently drinking adnams broadside (suffolk 6.5)which is spectacularly lovely, very dark, molassas notes with a dry finish. my previous beer was old peculiar from theakstons (north yorks 5.6)
the thing is, i love this stuff with a passion, i drink 2-3 beers a night but not every night, i am 12 stone so no beer belly.
now my real gripe is the availability of my beloved tipple. it bottles up just fine (i will admit it is better off tap but an utter bastard to stock unless you know what your doing) every time i go out i look at 20 different types of lager and almost cry. lager is the liquid equivilent to biege. chose which ever one you want theres only two types, syrpy and watery.
ales on the other hand. well now your talking! give me a pint of sussex old and i am in heaven, one leads to as many as i can drink!

all hail the ale!

Yes, Adnams Broadside is one of my favourite English beers, alongside Fullers 1845, London Porter & ESB, Sam Smith’s Imperial Stout and Meantime IPA.

The beers from Brewdog in Aberdeen have been a recent find. Love their Punk IPA and Paradox Smokehead Stout in particular. They have also succeeded in making a lager which actually tastes of something called Hop Rocker!!

  1. hi my husband drinks ales, he cant stand larger!!! He used to like something called newquay steam, but you cant get it anywhere now. he likes normal newcastle brown, old peculia. The marstons ales are nice (Well he says, ha ha) also ones made by the whychbold brewery you can get these from Aldi (If your in the UK) they have a wide selection. Careful you dont drink too many though as unfortunately my husband is now an alcoholic…..

  2. Nothing worse than a pub with a bar full of Fosters, Carling, Kronenburg, Strongbow and the "alternative" drink is Guinness, which isn’t stored properly so has no flavour. Tends to be the sort of pubs that I get invited to by friends who don’t have epicurean tastes in beer. Usually this lack of choice is accompanied by crap music, soulless decor and people who are out to pose rather than enjoy themselves.

My favourites are Waggledance, Honeydew, can’t go wrong with Pride, Adnams is good…

  3. it’s great stuff, I’ve drunk Adnams, but not broadside though.

It tastes best in a good real ale pub. It can’t be totally recreated outside of the pub.

Brakspear I once drank during a trip to Henley on Thames area – delicious.

  4. Agree. I go for Woodfords Wherry, but Adnams Broadsword and Old Speckled Hen are also worth drinking, not to mention Greene King’s Abbot. So few pubs are selling decent English beer, and fewer still at a decent "cellar" temperature, now the pubs are fitted with chromum plated hardware and chillers.

I think the Australians have done a lot of damage to UK beer serveries. It may be refreshing to drink a cold lager in hot Australia, but English beer has a flavour which is lost when it is cooled to ice cream temperatures.

Curse the big national breweries, fast production techniques and their modernisations of the pubs.

Nothing wrong with a properly tapped wooden barrel in a cool cellar.

  5. You will hate me as i am now slurping some Oranjeboom (well, the offie had it on special offer) It goes down well. I hate Brit lager with every force at my disposal, awful shite! It would significantly reduce the violent crime rate if it was banned. They don’t call it Wifebeater for nothing.
But I digress. Hopback Summer Lightning is a trancendental experience, the angels of rapture dance lovingly on my tongue drinking this, it is a transforming thing, a transport to another world of love, light and solace.
