I lived in China before. Basically, if you don’t make your own name beforehand, or have your language professor make one for you, you’ll get called all types of shit. Our names don’t translate well to Chinese…you can make up your own and it will be just fine.
My Chinese name is 乔纳森 (Qiao Na Sen) because it sounds like “Jonathan”. No last name for me…its just easier this way.

i dunno, the thing about patrice being put off being called “oneal” by chinese people is more them being confused more than anything.
asians put their family names first, followed by their given name. They must have assumed oneal was his first name since we give out our names in a reverse order.
