How do I make bare wood look old and tavern-like?
I bought a bare wood craft box to store some documents in, but I wanna give it a reddish brown pirate chest sorta color and I have no idea where to even begin
Stain it. Just go to a paint or hardware store and find a stain color that suits your liking and follow the directions on the package. If you want it to look beat up and worn then whip chains at it to dent it until you’re satisfied.
Remember, you’re looking for stain, not varnish (varnish will make it shiny).

Other things I would do (depending on the wood):
1) If the wood has a good grain pattern, give it a light "toasting" with a propane torch. JUST enough to slightly brown but not char the wood.
2) Beat it with hammer, nails, bike or chain-saw chain to "distress" the wood.
3) Stain the wood, again as Rana-Bana said, a STAIN not a varnish. Although I might use a paste-wax later to put a gentle seal on it without making it "shiny".
Just FYI… that "TAVERN" look is often from wood and tobacco smoke… One can duplicate THAT by buying a pack of cigarettes… soaking them in a cup or two of water for a few days, and then using THAT as an additional "Stain".
